About the role

Ohio State University is hiring an intermittent ice technician for the Schottenstein Center on its Columbus campus. The arena is home to Buckeye hockey and also hosts concerts and other events. The role sits in the Schottenstein Center operations team.

The technician drives the ice resurfacer and the edger to set up and keep the ice in shape for practices and games. You also take regular ice depth readings and check humidity levels in the building.

Before each use you check the machines over, swap the propane tanks, and change blades when they need it. When something small goes wrong mechanically, you are expected to troubleshoot it. All of the work is inside the ice arena.

The position is intermittent with varying shifts. Expect nights, weekends, and holidays when events are on. Final candidates must pass a background check, and the university may ask for a drug screen or physical after an offer.

  • Drive the Zamboni and edger to prepare and maintain the ice for practices and games
  • Take regular ice depth measurements and monitor humidity in the arena
  • Check each machine before use, swap propane tanks, and change blades as needed

  • Follow the arena's safety procedures on every shift

Requirements

  • Experience operating a Zamboni ice resurfacer and an edger
  • Some mechanical skill and comfort with basic tools
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds and stand and walk in cold, slippery conditions
  • High standards for ice quality, cleanliness, and careful machine work
  • Free for nights, weekends, and holidays as events require
  • Able to pass a background check
