About the role

The Calgary Flames are adding to the analytics group inside Hockey Operations. This is a builder's role: you design, develop, and maintain the software the organization uses to evaluate players, support coaching decisions, guide scouting, and track development. Alongside the engineering work you contribute to research projects aimed at understanding the game better.

The position is full-time, based at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, and sits within Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, which also operates the Wranglers, Hitmen, Stampeders, and Roughnecks. The posting states a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000 and stays open until the right person is found.

The work splits between keeping the club's proprietary hockey operations platform running well and extending it with new, accurate, well-presented tools for staff across the organization. You will also help design data pipelines that bring new data sources into the platform. Expect non-standard hours around games, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

This suits someone who is as comfortable shipping a web application as they are reasoning about the game statistically, and who wants their work to reach coaches and scouts directly. Applications go through the CSEC careers portal.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and optimize the club's proprietary hockey operations platform
  • Design and build new user-facing tools with a high standard for accuracy and presentation
  • Contribute to research on player and team performance, scouting, and player development
  • Help design and implement data pipelines that integrate new data sources

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • 3+ years in hockey analytics and/or professional software development
  • Experience designing and building web applications or comparable software
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills with modelling experience
  • High proficiency in Python or another general-purpose language
  • Familiarity with a web framework such as Flask or Django, and a front-end library such as React or Vue
  • Working knowledge of SQL, database development, and Linux environments
  • Strong hockey knowledge and the ability to apply analytical thinking to the sport
